The cinematography task of Raging Bull

"In the beginning there was just a guy with a camera"-by Michael Chapman

Cinematography, the technique of movie photography of both shooting and development of film, including the camera angel, level, height, distance.

Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull (USA, 1980) is a good example of having such a wonderful cinematography. We have been focus on the Genira Fight in the movie.

For the first scene of the fight is that Jake LaMotta walking to the ring. It employed one of the tracking camera work which is steady camera, while Jake is walking to the ring, the camera stays steady while the camera is moving backward. It is using deep focus all the frame is in focus while settings and figures are equally important. And it use medium shots which is more initmacy and focus on emotions of Jake.

The second scene is the entrance to the ring, the director uses the telephoto lenses which enable to zoom in and zoom out, also separate the character from the background. It has used panning to follow the whole movement of Jake while entering the ring. The effect of the close-up/medium close-up shots is because in order to focus attention on Jake's expression.

The third scene is the fight by using low angle and the shot type of BCU, the effect of using this camera angles and shot type is to show that Jake has a huge momentum and power to defeat another contestant.

The forth scene is end of the fight, it has used a canted angle by showing Jake has finished the fight and sat down resting to show that he was exhausted and tried his beat on the battle. And when the announcement was out, it started to use slow motion in order to let audience to focus on this scene since it is important to notice.

The very last scene is the celebration of Jake winning the battle by using tilt shot while Jake has worn the belt and this technique help people focus on the belt, the result of the winning the battle. The purpose of the extreme close-up is to let people remember the main spot of the scene and to focus on the character. And the camera was using the lower spot (the warm eye) which let the audience feel that Jake has made a huge success.

Metropolis the contrast of rich and poor

I and my classmates have watched Metropolis yesterday, which is filmed in 1927, directed by Fritz Lang and it is a German film. The world of Metropolis is only about working, no happiness in this place, people who work in Metropolis are keep doing the same process. The workers of Metropolis moves slowly when they walk to the elevator and begin to work. But after they start working, everything turns to be very high-speed. They are wearing dark uniforms, there are no happiness on their faces, and they all look listless and dispirited. They seems like to be forced to work and like without freedom or being restricted. The workers in the setting are keep doing the same process, and they look very small in the scene to hint that they are meaningless.

In the Metropolis, the lights are dim and dark, it gives out a negative and lifeless atmosphere in order to fit with the settings of Metropolis. The Metropolis is an underground world, since they began to start their work, they need to take an elevator in order to go to the workplace.

There is another place shown in the third scene, which is the garden. The people who play in the garden are upper-class people, most of them are ladies and waiting to in order to please the son of the very rich man who build the Metropolis. There is a big contrast between this location and the first location, the second one looks more lively and the lighting looks more bright and warm. These two locations wants to show the contrast of rich and poor, a place with freedom and power, and a place with sorrow and no happiness.

The main protagonists are the son of the city's mastermind and the lady which is a daughter of one the workers who work in Metropolis, since they both have big image on the screen. They are also the contrast between rich and poor.

The story of Metropolis is about the son of the city's mastermind and the one who build Metropolis one day met a girl which is a daughter of one the workers who work in Metropolis in the garden, and that made the son want to find the girl. Therefore he went to Metropolis and found huge different with is original place that he stay.

Night At the Museum Film Review

It is such a great news when I notice that there was Night At the Museum Secret of the Tomb in cinemas in middle of December 2014. I remember that the first series was in 2006, I was a 9-year-old kid, when I look at the poster, it seems that full of mystery and the character Larry (acted by Ben Stiller) was like  going to seek something very special with no one have been discovered before and it is going to be an adventure.

I thought every single film product produced by Hollywood must have scary scenes, but after watching the first two series of Night At the Museum, I know I was wrong, the Night At the Museum is hilarious and exciting. Something interesting which is even if you don't understand English well, you still found there are something funny in the movie.

I have never seen such a well-made movie, Night At the Museum Secret of the Tomb's animation is perfect and getting improved than the last two series, like this scene showing below:

 The dinosaur is animated, which is fake, which actor need to imagine by himself while filming imaginary scenes, I think the Night At the Museum team did very well, the angel very fitted with the reality and it is as same as real.

At last, it is about Robin Williams who is acting Teddy Roosevelt in the movie, pasted away last year, I was deeply grieved at the news, since he is such a great actor, I don't even notice that dub Disney's genie, the most memorable film that he had filmed was Mrs. Doubtfire(1993), next post I will make a film review about it.
